What happened

After discovering Soviet missiles in Cuba, the United States imposed a quarantine and entered an intense confrontation with the Soviet Union that ended only after reciprocal concessions.

Why it matters

Cuba is the clearest nuclear-risk event of the entire Cold War. It revealed the dangers of brinkmanship and helped push both sides toward more structured crisis management even as rivalry continued.

Notes

This is the indispensable nuclear-confrontation anchor.
