What happened

The United States, Canada, and a group of western European states signed the North Atlantic Treaty, establishing a collective-defense alliance.

Why it matters

NATO marks the move from improvised wartime aftermath to institutionalized bloc politics. It made western security a permanent alliance project and helped define the military architecture of the bipolar order.

Notes

Use this as the clearest alliance-hardening event on the western side.
