What happened

Francis II renounced the imperial title and declared the Holy Roman Empire dissolved in the context of Napoleon's reorganization of the German lands and the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine.

Why it matters

This event is the formal and legal endpoint of the Holy Roman Empire. Unlike the empire's beginning, its end date is sharply defined.

Notes

Francis II continued as Francis I, emperor of Austria, so the end of the Holy Roman Empire did not mean the end of Habsburg rule, only the end of this particular imperial structure. Napoleon's broader reorganization of the German states made the old imperial framework impossible to sustain.
