What happened
Napoleon Bonaparte, with allied political and military support, overthrew the Directory on 18 Brumaire Year VIII, which corresponds to 9 November 1799. The coup transferred power away from the revolutionary executive and toward a new authoritarian regime.
Why it matters
This is the conventional political endpoint of the French Revolution. It marks the collapse of the Directory and the rise of Napoleon, whose Consulate would preserve some revolutionary gains while closing the revolutionary political cycle.
