What happened

Napoleon led a French expedition to Egypt in 1798. The campaign was tactically dramatic but strategically inconclusive, and Napoleon returned to France in 1799 while the expedition continued without him.

Why it matters

The expedition reinforced Napoleon's public image as an exceptional military commander and put him back in France at the moment the Directory was weakest.

Notes

Use this as the transitional military-political phase between his Italian fame and the coup of 1799.
