What happened
The crown convened an Assembly of Notables in an attempt to win backing for major fiscal reforms. Instead of restoring confidence, the assembly became a stage on which elite resistance and doubts about royal authority were amplified.
Why it matters
This event shows how fiscal crisis became constitutional and political crisis. The monarchy's inability to impose or legitimize reform pushed it toward wider and riskier forms of consultation.
